Be yourself in online communication: how not to get lost in a mask
Recently, I often use video chat with random interlocutors and noticed that I am starting to change my behavior. At first it looked like a game, but now it is becoming more and more difficult for me to be myself when communicating. Every time I find a new interlocutor, I feel obliged to meet some expectations or create myself anew. How can I maintain my authenticity and remain myself while communicating in such chats?
The first step to authenticity is to become aware of your feelings and thoughts. It is important to understand what makes you change your behavior. Maybe it is the fear of being misunderstood or unaccepted? Try discussing your experiences with close friends or writing them in a journal. This will help you better understand yourself and your motives.
The second step is to learn to trust your inner voice. Remind yourself that it is important to remain yourself, and that your real qualities and interests are much more important than temporary images. Allow yourself to be imperfect and do not be afraid to make mistakes. We all learn from mistakes, and your interlocutors are no exception.
The third step is to find a balance between self-expression and the comfort of others. It’s important to remain polite and respectful, but at the same time, you should stick to your principles. Try using "I-statements” when sharing your thoughts and feelings. This will help you express yourself honestly without causing conflict.
Finally, practice mindful communication. Video chats provide a great opportunity to develop communication skills. Try to focus on the moment, listen to the other person, and be sincere. This will not only help you maintain your authenticity, but will also make the conversation more enjoyable and meaningful for both parties.
